My primary area of research focuses on the experimental analysis, understanding and modelling of the effects of cropping systems (and their arrangement within the landscape) on the life cycle of weeds and the consequences for agricultural production and biodiversity. The issues examined in our simulation studies are very broad: identifying varietal ideotypes or technical levers for agroecological weed management for use by breeders and farmers; the trajectories of weed flora and selected species traits in cropping systems; management of crop quality (fatty acid content, GMOs) where different varieties co-exist in landscapes and crop rotations, and the evaluation of land separation (‘landsparing’) versus land sharing (‘landsharing’) to reconcile crop production with biodiversity, etc. A second area of work concerns the co-design of decision-support tools and cropping systems with practitioners in the field, for the sustainable management of weeds with little or no use of herbicides.
